Art Bell’s Mother Passes Away

Jane Bell-Gumaer passed away Dec. 23, 2008.

Sadly, the mother of Radio Hall of Fame member and late-night talk show host Art Bell has lost her fight with cancer.

Jane Bell-Gumaer was 90.

Jane was born in Washington, D.C., and lived in New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and in Southhold, Long Island, N.Y., before moving to Hendersonville, North Carolina in 1998.

She was a graduate of Syracuse University. She was one of the first lady Marines of World War II, obtaining the rank of sergeant and serving at Marine Corp Headquarters and at Camp Lejeune.

She was one of the organizers and operators of the Treasure House Store at Lake Point Landing Retirement Home, and was editor of the in-house newspaper there.

She is survived by her sister, Barbara Lee Holthausen and niece Jane Bell Hogge of Owingsville, Ky., her son Art Bell of Pahrump, Nev., her daughter Jesse Bell Treff of Asheville, NC., and close, special friend Murray Chidester of Hendersonville, NC.
