Introduction
The Simpsons is a beloved show that has entertained millions throughout North America and even more outside of the continent for over three decades. According to Handy, plenty of Simpsons predictions, from smartwatches and Facetime to the NSA spying scandal and Donald Trump’s presidency has come true. Let’s look at some predictions that haven’t, yet.
The Predictions
- Hover Cars – In 2005, Professor Frink, the genius scientist from the Simpsons, created a machine that allowed the Simpsons siblings to gaze into their future. In that episode, Bart and Lisa see Marge leaving Homer in the future since he spends away all their savings on an underwater house and a hover car.
We may be very close to that future. Back in 2017, Renault showed the world a concept car, called “Float”. It uses the same technology present in Tesla’s Hyperloop and can change direction without steering. No more turning radius then.
- Virtual Reality Food – Another episode where the Simpsons went back to the future. In this episode, Marge and Homer have a dining experience where they eat “virtual fudge” with the help of feeding tubes and VR glasses.
If you are looking for a fine dining experience in VR, Royal Caribbean is working towards making that future a reality. If you don’t prefer a future like that, you can debate with the food scientists at Cornell University who found VR setting makes cheese taste better.
- Suppression of Green Energy – Lisa in the 582nd episode of the Simpsons, invented a car that runs on solar energy and makes good use of it in the Alternative Energy Derby. However, her race is sabotaged by the Duff blimp as it blocks out the sun.
If you didn’t get the cue, think about large corporate greed (maybe huge oil and coal corporations) preventing the progress of renewable energy for corporate greed. However, this is a prediction that will always hold true in the present and in the future.
- Ivanka Trump for President in 2028? – Simpsons predictions about the Donald Trump Presidency have come true and the creators of the show have made another subtle prediction for 2028. In one of the Simpsons episodes in 2016, Homer is seen with an “Ivanka 2028” campaign button.
- Mars Colonization – In one of the Simpsons episodes, Lisa volunteers for a one way, no return trip to Mars. Obviously, Marge is not thrilled. So, she joins her daughter to persuade her otherwise. In fact, the whole family signs up for the program to dissuade Lisa. The mission doesn’t go well in its launch year, 2026. However, the mother-daughter duo makes it to the red planet in 2051.
Elon Musk and a few others have laid out plans to colonize Mars. However, the required mammoth of a budget and technological advancements required in the project is a huge challenge.
Conclusion
Handy believes that we should be optimistic about the future. However, some of the predictions made by the Simpsons won’t sit well with a lot of people if they come true.
