The beauty of Sumba Indonesia, is already legendary, even being recognized by foreign countries. But if you find it troublesome to go to Sumba, coming to Java Mount Ijen can be an option.

This place offers a natural charm that is no less amazing than Sumba, so it is not surprising that many tourists from various countries come. Located in East Java, precisely in Bondowoso, Mount Ijen has the most giant acid crater in the world, with an area of about 5,466 hectares.

Mount Ijen’s Attractions

  1. Sunrise

One of the perfect times to come to this place is in the morning when the sun begins to rise on the eastern horizon. The sun’s rays make this crater look sparkling with a green Tosca-coloured light.

The crater water itself is bluish and calm. But unfortunately, visitors are prohibited from touching or being close to the sea because the temperature reaches 200 degrees Celsius, which is undoubtedly dangerous.

  1. Blue fire

The blue fire is one of the other attractions of Mount Ijen. But to see it, you must climb in the early morning because the glow of the fire will only be seen when it is still dark. This Blue Fire comes from the sulfur liquid, which will dry over time and later become mining material.

  1. Crater Lake Wall

If you walk to the southeast side of the crater, you can see another unique sight in the form of a lake wall called solfatara. While walking to the west side will see Dam Crater. Both are very exotic but also quite dangerous because of the challenging tracks.

  1. Mining View

In addition to enjoying the natural charm of Mount Ijen, you can also see mining activities carried out by local residents who work as cross sections. The sulfur mining process in this place is still carried out traditionally, and the equipment is quite simple. In fact, mining products are moved by carrying them in baskets.

  1. Souvenir and Culinary Hunting

One of the signature dishes of the Mount Ijen tourist attraction is rujak soto. You can find it at a food stall near the Paltuding post or several other food stalls around. There are also a variety of other hot snacks and drinks. As for souvenirs, one of the specialties is a small basket made of bamboo filled with yellow sulfur flakes.

  1. Complete Facilities

In addition to food stalls and souvenir shops, this tourist attraction has other facilities in the form of lodges, bathrooms, rest posts, and shops that sell or rent hiking equipment. The lodges have various rates ranging from 150,000 IDR to Rp. 500,000 IDR per night per room.

There are two routes to get to Mount Ijen if you are interested in coming, via Bondowoso and via Banyuwangi. Both will take you to Paltuding, the entrance to Mount Ijen. If you’re coming from Surabaya, the best option is via Bondowoso because it is closer.
