Hiking Safety
Safety considerations are an important part of planning your hiking adventure. Before you lace up your hiking boots, review these steps.
- Plan your hike; know where you will park and select your trails before you head into the woods.
- Share your itinerary with someone. As an extra precaution, leave a copy of your itinerary in your car.
- Bring a copy of your planned hike with you. Don’t rely on cell service and following a map on your phone.
- Consider a subscription to an App that provides hiking maps even if you don’t have cell phone service.
- Carry a backpack with a first aid kit just in case!
- Hydrate before the hike.
Leave No Trace
Hiking trails are an important way to preserve our natural resources. So, following the guidelines set forth in Leave No Trace helps ensure that the trails and lands are protected and available for others.
The seven principles of Leave No Trace are –
- Plan your hike, which includes knowing the rules and restrictions of the area. Check the weather before starting out; if severe weather is predicted, alter your plans.
- Hike on pathways created for hikers. Don’t wander off and create your own trails.
- Do not leave any trash. Bring back with you all your garbage, which includes food waste.
- Don’t pick flowers or gather souvenirs from the woods.
- If you build a campfire, do so in already created fire pits. Make certain that the fire is completely doused before you leave it. Do not start a fire when there are fire warnings.
- Remember that you are hiking in the home of animals. Do not approach any wildlife. If the trail permits your pet, make sure they are leashed if there are animals in the area.
- Be courteous and kind to other hikers that you encounter.
